About Ana Rifa!

haunted art and thought [the castle]
"The butterfly counts not months but moments, and has time enough" -Rabindranath Tagore

THE CASTLE is a 10:47 min. video piece that talks about the passage of time and instances of memory. The piece shows a series of 5 sequences where the element of time is present. The relationship with objects and time is what constructs each one of the sequences, just as objects in/and time construct memories of my life in a different set of chronological and physical space.

The seminar from where this piece sprung (haunted art and thought: on specism), was dedicated to the theorization of the animal relation as a basic to the definition of the human, dead and alive. There were a number of films shown during the term such as The Company of Wolves, Mr. V and White Dog, among others. Some of the texts read during the course as well comprehend "A Thousand Plateaus" by G. Deleuze and F. Guattari, Phillip K. Dicks "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep", "Totem and Taboo" by Sigmund Freud and Kafka's complete stories among other texts.
Diana Thater presented some of her work where she posted questions about the natural and the animal world when it overlaps with a manipulated environment and how this influences their world and ours. Her work is highly abstract and the manipulation of the media is embodied in video installations.
Laurence Rickel's input was on the intersections between psychoanalysis and technology, as well as our relationship with the animal world. (We also read texts from his work, such as "Pet Grief" and his own "Totem and Taboo").
The midterm and final critiques where conducted by Diana Thater, Gabrielle Jennings and Stan Douglas.
